Snowmobile Safety Week
This year snowmobile safety week will take place from January 14th to 20th, 2024. It’s during this week we should all take time to focus on best practices and safe riding habits, and pass them along to new riders; whether it’s family or friends.
If you’re not sure exactly what to discuss, we have a few suggestions for you. The following are some of the bigger safety issues that should be discussed with any new rider before heading out on their first trip.
Safety Tips
- Never consume alcohol or drugs before or during snowmobiling.
- Have the proper SNOWMOBILE equipment. A basic winter jacket doesn't cut it, you should have specialized snowmobile gear.
- Become familiar with the snowmobile you ride. Get a feel for the throttle and handling before hitting the trail at full speed.
- Always operate at safe and reasonable speeds.
- Stay on the trail unless you have express permission from the landowner. And when off trail realize you can't know what's hidden under the snow.
- Be extremely cautious on all bodies of water, even if you "know" they're frozen enough to ride on (spoiler alert: you don't know).
- Know the weather and have a plan. Despite what you may think, it CAN be too cold to ride. Regardless of weather, make sure someone else knows where you're going and when to expect you back. Never ride alone.
Obviously there are more things you can discuss, and plenty of other safety tips out there, but these are a few of the basics you can, and should, touch on with any new rider. We at the SSA will be posting safety tips and information on our Facebook page during safety week and hope you’ll take the opportunity to share them with your friends and followers.Â
