A blast from the past
Blast from the past
SSA 50th Anniversary
Reminisce rallies, summon up snow shows of yesteryear, and pore over our past with a deep dive into the Sask Snow archives.
History's history
Interestingly enough while digging through the archives I found a form from 1989 made out to Snowmobile Magazine with dates and moments from the associations past.
Here’s what was submitted:
March 1972
Provincial Snowmobile Meet held in Melfort, Sask. and hosted by the Melfort Sno-Blazers. A big meeting was held to deal with the threat of the proposed snowmobile legislation for the Province.
1972 -1974
The forming of a number of Search and Rescue Groups as part of local snowmobile clubs.
1978
A concerted effort was made to find and sign up snowmobile clubs in the province. The president then, Al Langstaff, drove around the province speaking to dealers who put in contact with a local snowmobiler. Approx 25 new clubs became members of the Saskatchewan Snow Vehicle Assoc.
1980
Hosting the first Provincial Snowmobile Meet of the SSA by the provincial directors in the Prince Albert / MacDowall area.
1981
The Development of the SSOTP - Saskatchewan Snowmobile Operators Training Program - This was a joint venture between the SSA and different government departments. Thirty instructors were trained and sent out to teach youth 12 years and older.
1986
Started hosting two provincial meets. One in the north and one in the south of the province. Also started recognizing the work done by snowmobilers for charity.
Remembering Membership
Of course along with your SSA membership came the SSA Newsletter. Because the posting of this page coincides with our December (2021) newsletter, I did some digging and was able to find an old December newsletter from 1982. It would seem praying for snow in December is nothing new! Below you can find a image of the Dec 1982 Newsletter as well as a transcription for ease of reading. Just do us a favor, don’t actually try to contact any of the people or places mentioned in it, there’s a good chance they’re not still there to take the call… or that they even still have a landline.
