1963 R6 Skidoo

By: Gord Wyatt

My father, Douglas Wyatt, purchased this sled in 1966. It was advertised, as I recall, in the Western Producer and sold through Brook’s Equipment in Winnipeg.

Dad took delivery of the sled “sight unseen”, and it arrived in November 1966 via CP Rail. At that time there were very few sleds in the area, and this one soon earned a reputation for being able to go though massive amounts of snow without getting bogged down. However, it was no speed demon, with a clocked speed of about 28 miles per hour!

Through the years new sleds came and went, but Dad, and myself for that matter, could never bring ourselves to part with it. In 1974 “old yeller” past to my wife, Maurena, who still recalls so many fun times with so many good friends in times that sledding was a little less organized than it is now. Wiener roasts in Tetlock Coulee, rides down Bob Cat Trail, visits to the “Moose Caboose” and climbing the snow covered hills in the Pipestone Valley, winding through the many trails all come to mind.

Through the late 80’s and early 90’s both our daughters cut their sledding teeth on the 1963. However, by the late 90’s interests changed and our favourite old skidoo was relegated to storage in the quonset.

Recent activities motivated us to find a good home for it. Richard Schropp purchased the sled in the fall of 2010, and, as you can see, has restored it as a true masterpiece.
