Snowmobile Safety Week
Snowmobile Trails Are Safe - Use Them
January 15 – 21, 2012 is Snowmobile Safety week.
With the early abundant snowfall this year, a major concern for riders is thin ice. Thin ice may appear on rivers, lakes, creeks, sloughs and water in ditches. We have already had a number of accidents caused by thin ice this year. Our latest report was of a man falling through the ice on his snowmobile on January 2, 2011.
A man and woman were snowmobiling back to Regina Beach from Craven, on the river system disregarding thin ice warnings in the area. The man had decided to go onto the Qu’Appelle River at Valeport to get onto Last Mountain Lake, and the snowmobile fell through the ice. Luckily he was able to jump off before if completely sank, but he was still wet up to his chest and was very lucky that the weather had been good that day. The snowmobile sank 3 feet underwater, and had to be pulled out the next day.
Please be aware of thin ice and remember that just because the ice is thick in one spot, does not mean it will be all over.
The best rule to follow is “If you don’t know – don’t go!”
